What to Wear for Your Kid’s Headshot: A Quick Guide

After capturing countless adorable faces in McKinney, one of the most common questions I receive is, “What should my child wear for their headshot?” A well-chosen outfit can make a world of difference in the final result. Here’s a guide to help you select the perfect attire for your little one’s photoshoot.

Consider Your Child’s Personality

The first step is to think about your child’s personality. Does your little one love bright colors or prefer more muted tones? Choose an outfit that reflects their unique style and makes them feel confident.

For example, if your child is a sporty kid, you might opt for a casual outfit like a t-shirt and jeans. If your child is more girly, a dress or skirt would be a great choice. Remember, the goal is to capture your child’s personality, not to force them into something they’re uncomfortable with.

Choose a Solid Color

When it comes to colors, solid colors are generally best for headshots. Patterns can be distracting and take away from your child’s face. However, if you choose a patterned outfit, ensure the pattern is not too busy.

Consider the color of your child’s skin tone and hair color when selecting their outfit. For example, if your child has fair skin, a bright color like red or blue can look great. If your child has darker skin, a more muted color like navy or brown might be a better choice.

Avoid Logos and Brands

Logos and brands can be distracting in headshots. It’s best to choose an outfit that is free of any logos or branding. This will help your child’s face stand out in the image.

Pay Attention to Fit

The fit of your child’s outfit is also important. Assure the clothes fit well and are not too tight or too loose. A well-fitting outfit will help your child look and feel their best.

A loose-fitting outfit can make your child look sloppy, while a tight-fitting outfit can be uncomfortable and distracting. Aim for a comfortable and flattering fit.

Accessorize Sparingly

Accessories can add a touch of personality to your child’s headshot, but it’s important to use them sparingly. Too many accessories can be distracting and take away from your child’s face.

A simple necklace or bracelet can be a great way to accessorize your child’s outfit. However, avoid wearing too many accessories at once.

Utilize your Photographer’s Client Closet

Inquire with your Photographer to find out if they have a Children’s Client Closet.  This can serve as a valuable resource allowing you to save time and money searching for and purchasing a whole new outfit just for photos.  Photographers have a trained eye for detail and are often more than happy to help choose clothing for your child’s session.  Using clothing from a Children’s Client Closet would the easiest and best option for busy, overwhelmed parents.

Additional Tips

  • Comfort is everything. Ensure your child is comfortable in their outfit. If they’re not comfortable, it will show in the photos.
  • Choose timeless styles. Avoid trendy outfits that may quickly go out of style.
  • Test the outfit before the photoshoot. Make sure your child is comfortable wearing the outfit and that it fits well.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. Have fun and try different outfits until you find one that you love.
  • Hair and Makeup: While hair and makeup are often not necessary for children’s headshots, you may want to consider a simple hairstyle or a touch of makeup if your child is older.
  • Location: If your child’s headshot is for a specific purpose, such as a modeling portfolio, it’s important to choose an outfit that is appropriate for the location. For example, if your child is auditioning for a commercial, you might want to choose a more casual outfit.
  • Budget: Keep your budget in mind when choosing your child’s outfit. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to find a great outfit. There are many affordable options available.
